Many women experience changes in their breasts as they age. Most often, these changes include depletion of volume and loss of skin elasticity, resulting in loss of youthful shape and firmness. Whether the instigator is aging, hormones, genetics, weight loss, pregnancy, or nursing, these changes are often less than desirable. Breast lift surgery is a procedure that restores the breasts to a more uplifted, youthful, and pleasing appearance.
Good candidates include women who are in good general health, have realistic expectations, and have lost breast shape due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, aging, or other causes. Ideal candidates are at a stable and normal weight and have no immediate plans for future pregnancies. The surgery itself poses no risks to future pregnancies, but breastfeeding or a future pregnancy can be detrimental to the results of a breast lift.
During your consultation with Dr. D’Amore, he will assess your overall goals and desires. He will then recommend the best technique to achieve your optimal results.
PROCEDURE AND OPTIONS
Breast lift surgery is performed under a light general anesthesia provided by a board-certified anesthesiologist. There are many variations to the procedure, but the three most common incisions are around the areola (circumareolar), around the areola and down vertically (lollipop), and around the areola, down vertically, and horizontally along the breast crease (anchor). The different options and procedure technique recommended for you will be discussed at the time of your initial consultation. If additional volume is also desired in addition to a lift, an implant or fat grafts can be done to achieve the patient’s desired result at the time of the procedure or at a later date.
Following the procedure, rest is recommended for the first few days with limited activities planned for about a week. After three to four days, you will return to the office to have all dressings removed. Usually, all stitches are dissolvable and do not need to be removed. You will be given a surgical sports bra to wear to keep you comfortable during your recovery period. After one week, most patients can return to work and resume their daily activities but must continue to avoid strenuous activities for about three weeks. Dr. D’Amore will provide you with specific written guidelines to ensure the best possible recovery experience.
Breast lift surgery may vary significantly in cost due to the techniques used and procedures performed. During your personalized consultation, our patient coordinator will provide you with a detailed cost sheet.
RESULTS AND BENEFITS
The final outcome of your breast lift will appear over the next few weeks to months with changes in the swelling and incision lines. Your breasts will settle into a more youthful position, and the scars will continue to fade over time. The results of a breast lift can be long lasting and well-maintained with a reasonably stable body weight. Aging, gravity, and changes that occur in the breasts during pregnancy can minimize the results of a breast lift, but with proper support, you will be able to retain and enjoy your new look for a long time.
